Can we talk about mentorship as a key ingredient in building your trust circle and relevance?

Mentorship is simply a relationship where a person who seeks to rise in a particular field allows themselves to be guided and led by a person who is experienced in that industry

A mentorship relationship is a choice, it cannot happen unless the mentor and the mentee permit it. The mentee must demonstrate a readiness to follow the mentor, take instruction and be obedient. The mentor must demonstrate a willingness to share their experiences with the mentee.

How do you know which mentorship relationship will work for you? Your starting point in answering this question is knowing yourself and what you want to achieve. This knowledge will guide you in deciding which mentorship relationship to submit to.

For an emerging leader, mentorship has three key benefits:

• Mentorship allows you to rise by standing on another person's influence and relevance whilst building your own influence.

• Mentorship offers you a safe place to make all your mistakes, learn your lessons and build yourself up.

• Mentored makes it easier for industry players to trust you because they know your source. It's like product shopping. Sometimes, we buy an item from a particular brand or company because we know they produce quality items.

So take a step of boldness and bring yourself under mentorship. I say boldness because being a mentee sometimes requires you to put your dreams on hold so you can be led by your mentor. Sometimes, it comes with a lot of other sacrifice, but the benefit of standing tall on the shoulders of industry giants and having your own relevance is worth the sacrifice.
